Bates College is a small, coeducational-residential, liberal arts and sciences institution which grants baccalaureate degrees. It does not permit fraternities, sororities, or any organization not open to all students. Its admissions are highly competitive, with students representing 50 states and over 68 foreign countries. The faculty of 192 offers 32 major programs. The college library holds over 550,000 volumes, 80 Web-accessible research databases, and more than 4,000 electronic journals, full-text titles or other electronic resources accessible through the catalog. More than half of the graduates of the College eventually go on for further graduate work in one of the academic fields or in one of the professions. The living alumni now number approximately 13,000.
