Bowdoin College is an independent, nonsectarian, coeducational, residential, undergraduate liberal arts college, founded in 1794, and situated near the coast in Brunswick. Enrollment is 1,647 students with 170 full-time-equivelant faculty members. Student/faculty ratio is 10:1.
Bowdoin offers 37 departmental and interdisciplinary majors. Its admissions program is highly selective. Submission of SAT or ACT scores is optional. Facilities on the 110-acre campus include 60 academic, residential, and athletic buildings highlighted by the 950,000-volume Hawthorne-Longfellow Library; Bowdoin College Museum of Art; Peary- MacMillian Arctic Museum; Coastal Studies Center as well as two other scientific field stations; new student union; new theater; two gymnasiums; 16-lane swimming pool; new fitness center; indoor and outdoor tracks and tennis courts; ice arena; 35 acres of playing fields.
