The College of the Atlantic was founded in 1969 to provide an ecological, problem-solving approach to education that combines academic rigor in the arts and sciences with practical application. The College's small size allows students to work closely with the faculty and to design an individualized program suited to their own particular interests. The shorefront location of the campus allows students to take advantage of the abundant natural resources offered by the Atlantic Ocean and nearby Acadia National Park.
The College of the Atlantic awards the Bachelor of Arts in Human Ecology. The study of human ecology emphasizes the understanding of interrelationships between humans and the technological and natural environments. Students may concentrate their studies in one or more of the following areas: design, environmental science, landscape and building architecture, marine studies, natural history/museum studies, public policy, education and teacher certification and selected humanities studies. Student-initiated workshops, independent studies, internships, and senior projects provide important learning experiences. Forty percent of COA's alumni have pursued graduate or professional education at some of the country's leading institutions.
Residents of Hancock County may enroll for one or two courses per term at a greatly reduced rate. Adults are encouraged to seek admission to the college and do receive careful consideration in the admission process.
