Colby College, located in the lakes region of central Maine, has a 714-acre campus often ranked the most beautiful in the country. The entire campus is a wildlife management area. New facilities include an apartment complex for members of the senior class, a major 9,000 square-foot addition to the extraordinary Colby Museum of Art, and a studio art building. Colby's libraries house more than 900,000 items.
The 12th oldest independent liberal arts college in the nation, founded in 1813 and coeducational since 1871, Colby has maintained a reputation for excellence. The education offered is based on the belief that a broad acquaintance with human knowledge is the best preparation for the professions, for graduate study, and for life. To that end, Colby offers a traditional liberal arts program that is complemented by extensive interdisciplinary programs and extensive opportunities for independent and off-campus study. Students sit on virtually all major committees of the College and actively participate in a wide variety of experiences.
With the permission of the dean of admissions and the course instructor, area residents may enroll in courses at the College. Qualified nontraditional students have the opportunity to enroll in a self-paced program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree.
