Maine College of Art (MECA) is a dynamic college of art and design where nationally recognized faculty, interdisciplinary programs, and state-of-the-art facilities create an educational experience that gives fresh vision to Maine's extraordinary legacy in the visual arts. Founded in 1882, MECA educates artists at all states of their creative careers, offering both the Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees, as well as a wide range of summer institutes and continuing studies classes for individuals of all ages.
Maine College of Art is a fully accredited, independent college of art and design with an enrollment of approximately 400 students who come from the United States as well as several foreign countries. The College, including residence facilities, is housed in several recently renovated historic buildings.
Maine College of Art is noted for its strong foundation program in drawing and two- and three-dimensional design, which precedes study in the major. The mastery of these fundamentals permits students to devote the greater part of their time in the second two years to the major. Majors have individual workspaces within their departments and all students have 24-hour access to studio buildings. Throughout the four years, students enroll in liberal arts and art history courses, and use the College's library of 20,000 art volumes, 100 periodical titles, and 40,000 slides.
Each semester, the school offers evening and some day courses through its continuing studies programs. Courses in Ceramics, Drawing, Photography, Painting, Sculpture, Woodworking, Graphic Design, Metalsmithing and Jewelry, Printmaking, Liberal Arts, and Fibers. The courses are taught by professional artists and teachers and vary in the amount of course credit offered.
