Unquestionably Maine's finest public liberal arts college, the University of Maine at Farmington, located in the foothills of the western mountains near world class skiing and hiking, provides baccalaureate degrees in a traditional, residential academic environment. Programs are offered through the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education, Health and Rehabilitation. Programs in Education are nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The enrollment cap of 2000 students allows U Maine Farmington to have a combination of small classes and provide personal attention, as well as to offer a wide variety of academic programs and extra-curricular activities. Students can be involved in an active Honors program, student government, community choral and orchestral groups, theatre and dance groups, and many special interest clubs. Intercollegiate (NCAA), club, and intermural sports are offered. Students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities as well as the national and international student exchange programs to enhance their academic experience.
The majority of first-year students to live on-campus in a variety of residential options that include all female, co-ed, quiet, scholar, and healthy lifestyle areas. Support services on campus include a health clinic, a fitness center, personal and vocational counseling, academic advising, tutoring and academic support services, state-of-the-art computer center, a wireless computing environment and a well equipped library. Admission is selective and students interested in programs in creative writing and education are encouraged to apply early since these programs may fill quickly. More than 8 out of 10 students receive some form of financial aid. To meet the deadline for priority consideration, the FAFSA must arrive at the federal processor by March 1.
Admission of UMF is selective. The majority of students at UMF enter directly from high school; however, qualified transfer students and older students are encouraged to apply. The admission decision is based on adequate preparation for college, academic potential, and motivation to succeed. Age is not a factor in the decision. The high school record, GED, and/or previous college transcripts(s) are among the criteria used to make a decision. Excellent support services such as the Learning Assistance Center and the Center for Human Development are available to help smooth the transition to UMF's supportive learning environment.
