Ranked as a "2006 Best College in the Northeastern Region" by The Princeton Review, the University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) offers a unique educational setting and excellent academic programs, all with an international flavor.
Located on the United States-Canadian border in northernmost Maine, the school immerses students in the nation's largest francophone community, and exposes them to the French language and culture.
With the North Maine Woods as its backyard, environmental studies are enriched by 3.5 million acres of ancient forests, two famous wild rivers of the Northeast, and the 92-mile-long ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.
Studies take students off-campus, out of the country, or into the surrounding natural environment. A modern hospital offers valuable clinical experience for nursing students while education and business students benefit from an exceptionally strong campus-community relationship. The wilderness area provides opportunities for hands-on experience testing streams and collecting species. Students participate in research alongside expert faculty.
UMFK is a 128-year-old regional baccalaureate public university serving 1,100 students. The small University of Maine System campus offers excellent academic programs -- both on-campus and on-line -- that focus on living and working in rural communities close to the natural environment.
UMFK's faculty-to-student ratio is 15:1, with an average class size of 15. International students make up 27 percent of the student population.
Academic programs are offered through four divisions; Arts & Humanities, Education, Nursing, and Natural & Behavioral Sciences. Visit the UMFK website at: www.umfk.maine.edu/usnews for a complete list of majors and degrees.
Minutes from the 52-acre campus is a world-class biathlon facility, twenty-two miles of cross-country ski trails that pass outside the dorms, and more than 2,300 miles of well-groomed snowmobile trails.
Admission requirements, tuition rates and financial aid programs are designed to eliminate unnecessary obstacles. High school seniors with adequate grades can be competitive for admission to most majors at UMFK without the worry of submitting standardized test results.
Tuition rates and fees at UMFK are the lowest of Maine's seven public universities, and one of the most affordable in New England. More than seventy-five percent of UMFK students receive financial aid, and graduates from many New England high schools outside of Maine can qualify for a special reduced tuition rate equivalent to one-and-a-half times the in-state rate.
Since 2002, UMFK has added three new buildings to its 100 percent wireless campus. Student enrollment has increased by 33 percent during that same timeframe. UMFK also houses an Acadian archives, which documents and disseminates historical and cultural information about the history and cultural heritage of the St. John Valley.
The University's athletic teams compete in soccer, basketball, Nordic and alpine skiing, volleyball, golf, and cross-country.
