What sets apart the University of Maine at Machias from so many other leading small New England liberal arts colleges? While the differences are many, the opportunities for learning by doing in a unique coastal environment make UMaine Machias a first choice for students looking to stretch beyond the classroom.
UMaine Machias students are engaged not just in their classwork, but in their community and their environment. Education student get real classroom experience in their first year of study. Marine Biology students experience Maine's aquaculture industry first-hand. Business Administration majors participate in work/study and internship programs at local banks.
While the Downeast coastal environment orients almost every program at the University, there is also a strong focus on the individual. Classes are relatively small (the average size is sixteen students), and faculty are genuinely concerned with each student's success.
UMaine Machias has both a national and an international reputation. Programs in Marine Biology, Environmental Studies, Recreation Management, Biology, Education, Business Administration, English, History, Behavioral Science, and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts attract students from across the country as well as from overseas. The diversity of the student body brings a richness to the college and campus life that is usually associated with only large urban campuses.
The University's location is equally suited for recreation as well as education. The coastal waters, inland lakes, forests, and streams that provide the outdoor classrooms for students in the Recreation Management program are frequent destinations for students who want to hike, bike, sail, kayak or ski.
The athletic facilities at UMaine Machias include a competition-size pool, 1200-seat gymnasium, racquetball courts, a lighted soccer field, as well as weight training, fitness, and aerobics facilities. The college fields seven intercollegiate teams: women's basketball, cross-country, soccer, and volleyball; and men's basketball, cross-country, and soccer.
All UMaine Machias courses and programs, day or evening, are available to students studying on a part-time basis. An increasing variety of credit and non-credit offerins are given on a regular basis, both on-campus and off-campus in Washington County to serve the needs of the degree candidates as well as the prelicense requirements of a number of special groups.
The Student Resource Center provides services for helping students improve their learning skills. These services are open to all UMaine Machias students at no cost.
