University College (UC) is the part of the University of Maine System (UMS) that provides statewide access to courses and degrees for those who cannot pursue studies on a UMS campus.

In communities statewide, students can take courses leading to 37 degrees and certificate programs. Courses offered through UC are the same quality courses available on university campuses, so students can receive financial aid, apply for scholarships, and transfer credits with confidence.

At 11 UC centers around Maine, people can take university courses, pursue degrees, and receive all the support they need to earn a degree close to home and on schedules that fit into their family and work lives. Courses are taught by UMS faculty on-site, online or via interactive television (ITV). That combination of "close to home" access and on-going personal support in a smaller enbironment are the hallmarks of the UC Centers.

On these "mini-campuses," students enjoy personalized support services designed to give beginners a great start in college and advanced students the tools they need to stay on course. Professionals and trained student advisors assist students with admission and financial aid, placement testing, course registration, book orders, the online library catalog, computer conferencing, e-mail and much more.

In addition to a full-range of services, UC offers the following special programs:

Osher Scholarships
Qualified students who would like to give college a try can apply for an Osher scholarship, which will pay up to $500 toward tuition, books and fees for one course. A person must be a Maine resident with a high school diploma or GED, must fill out a simple one-page request form, and must enroll in a qualifying course. Preference is given to those who have never completed a college course.

Liberal Arts Certificate
To help students get started, UC offers a six-course Certificate in Liberal Arts, which provides a solid foundation for transfer to any of the UMS campuses or a Maine community college. The certificate is awarded when a student has completed at least one course in each of six core Liberal Arts subject areas.

Senior College
This program is designed to provide a curriculum of intellectually stimulating learning opportunities and special activities for people 55 years of age and older. Senior College is available at our Brunswick, Ellsworth Sanford and Thomaston locations.

In addition to the 11 UC Centers, ITV and online classes are available at over 75 sites around the state in high schools, adult education centers, community centers, and other locations. Coordinated by the local UC Center, staff at sites welcome students, distribute and collect course materials, proctor exams, and monitor classroom equipment.

For more information about UC and its services, contact a location near you or call 1-800-868-7000. Visit us on the Web for the latest course information: www.learn.maine.edu.
