At the University of Southern Maine you will find the atmosphere of a small New England residential college combined with the choices typically available only at large, national urban universities. Our student body including approximately 4500 full-time undergraduates, 4500 part-time and non-degree candidate and 2100 graduate students makes us large enough to provide a wide range of offerings; yet small enough to offer classes averaging around 22 students. Almost half of our full-time undergraduates reside on campus.
Within a two hours' drive north of Boston, we are located in scenic Southern Maine, with the breathtaking Atlantic Ocean on one side and majestic mountains and lakes on the other. Our dual residential campus offers the best of both worlds, combining the city culture of Portland with the village charm of Gorham. Lewiston-Auburn, our third campus, offers a unique interdisciplinary learning experience for students living in this region of Maine.
Our curriculum combines both theory and practice, and includes field practica, co-ops, and internships as well as a nationally recognized Honors Program.
USM offers over 50 majors and 40 academic programs, 23 NCAA Division III teams, and nearly 100 student clubs and organizations.
USM is uniquely qualified to meet the needs of adult students. Courses are scheduled from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. on weekdays or weekends, enabling students to balance academics, work and family responsibilities.
The Admission Office has counselors who advise prospective adult students regarding the admission process. The adult application form should be used by people who have been out of high school for three or more years. Previous academic work as well as recent life and/or work experiences which relate to the intended major and a required essay are evaluated in the admission process.
